12 things you have to do your first time in Vegas

When planning a trip to Las Vegas, one might come across dozens of expired lists of things to do on your first time in Sin City, — psst, The Rat Pack doesn’t play at the Sands anymore — but the city changes as quickly as the face of a clock.

If you’re looking to hit everything you need to hit during your first trip to Las Vegas, whether that be for a 21st, anniversary or wedding, consider this the start of your checklist.

Call them cliché, call them what you will, but we asked our Facebook fans for things they think someone has to do on their first trip to Vegas, and these are some of the suggestions they gave:

See the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas Sign”

It’s the icon of our city, designed by the late Betty Willis. It was put at the south end of the Strip in 1959 and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009.

See the Bellagio fountains

If you’ve ever seen a movie featuring Las Vegas, you’ve seen these in the background. Pro-tip: they’re a lot cooler in person.

Hit the slots at McCarran

If you’re coming to Las Vegas with the intention of gambling, the airport should be your first stop. Where else in the world can you play the slots in an airport?

Lake Mead and/or Hoover Dam

The best parts about seeing a new city can be exploring outside of the city, and with such a historic monument such as Hoover Dam nearby, it’d be a shame to miss it.

Elvis exhibit at the Westgate

Located at one of the places Elvis played the most (well, it used to be the International Hotel), this exhibit, suggested by Shaun Daily, gives you everything you need to become an expert on The King.

Mob or Neon Museum

Both located near or in Downtown Las Vegas, both of these museums provide something special to the city. The Mob Museum highlights exactly what you think it does, while the Neon Museum houses much of the retired signage from the city’s past.

Go see a show on the Strip

There are dozens of shows on the Strip, ranging from sexy to kid-friendly to downright weird. Try to see one you can’t get anywhere else, especially if you’re visiting from New York.

Fremont Street and Container Park

Downtown Las Vegas has become its own animal in the last few years, offering way more for partiers, families and solo travelers. There is always something happening these days in downtown, so its worth checking out.

Fly in at night

It might be a pain to choose time over cost, but flying in over Vegas at night will give you one of the best aerial views in the world — and we’re not just saying that.

Play a roulette or craps table at least once

Especially if you can’t where you’re traveling from, this is a good suggestion from Tamara Hampton. Playing a table game is one thing, but joining in on a packed roulette table when the stakes are high is another experience.

The High Roller at the Linq

Joseph Gonzalez suggests taking advantage of one of the city’s more recent (and, well, instantly famous) attractions. The 550-foot-tall wheel turned one this year.

Throw away your return flight tickets and call Las Vegas home

Long-time locals can’t argue with this tip from Vinnie Vitali. We’ll understand if it’s not in your plans, though.
